Specializes in Custom Furniture and Crafts

My name is Ryan Lucas, and I am a full-time woodworker. I started Skyline Wood Furniture because my wife wanted an affordable, solid wood, outdoor table. But we couldn’t find anything that met our needs. So, I decided to make it myself and it’s become a passion ever since.

These days we’re conditioned to buy mass-produced furniture that is made of flimsy materials, with artificial surfaces that lack uniqueness. Mass produced furniture’s life span is short and, in a few years, winds up in the dump with thousands of identical pieces next to it. This type of furniture is cold to the touch, aesthetically unappealing, and it has replaced one of the greatest things nature’s provided us; real wood. From a coffee table, entryway console, or to a bed, we make furniture out of natural beautiful wood. Wood doesn’t require huge amounts of grain-hiding stain or shiny thick topcoats. Worm holes, age, complex knots, and interesting grain structure is inviting to the touch and appealing to the eye.

Using oil for wood surfaces and wax, we’re able to highlight already beautiful wood.
Oil helps make the purple in Purpleheart keep its brightness and oil on a simple board helps highlight grain and my favorite knots! Coating a piece with wax helps with water resistance and holding oil in.

At Skyline Wood Furniture we are committed to building functional and beautiful furniture that is interesting and natural. With your needs in mind and our guidance, we will work together from concept and design to build and installation. My commitment to you is to bring inviting, one of a kind, affordable furniture, that will make you feel proud and leave your guests and family in awe. Please reach out to me so we can get started making your dream furniture together.

The Story of some of my tools

Both Worlds

I Love old tools. The feel of a 100+ year hand plane or brace excites me and I love to use. But I also love the convenience,  and accuracy of new powered tools.  So as I as I have grown as a woodworker I live in both worlds. It is rare for any project to not have a hand plane grace its surface or be measured with a square that predates WWII. I will have more tools and stories listed on our Facebook page. Please check it out.

Pre 1920's Union X Plane! My go to plane and the most used plane I have!

A New Veritas low angle plane. Works great on difficult grains! Also with a thick iron no chatter

My Favorite Braces are Scottish Pattern! Here are also few of my centering bits. That is the name of the bit style. I prefer Batwing.

My Sawstop

When I first got serious about woodworking, I had a underpowered very old Craftsman table saw I bought for $50.00. I knew I had to upgrade. But I was also scared. On the one hand a table saw is the most used tool in a modern woodworking shop. The other is the fact that 40,000 treated accidents occur every year in the US. So I bought my first Sawstop. Now I have a much more powerful 3 HP professional cabinet saw, but it is also a Sawstop. They cost about twice as much as any other brand. But the saw is built

Cutting Board Care and Maintenance

Cutting Board Care and Maintenance

These cutting boards are made with handpicked wood and built with care. They are intended for use and have a lifetime guarantee against delamination or breakage. But, with all things made of wood it is important for upkeep and maintenance.

Knife cuts are normal and can be repaired by a little sanding and then retreatment –which I will be more than happy to do for you. We are now having our own oil and wax made. Boards are treated first with cutting board oil and then coated with board wax.

The oil penetrates and The waxy surface will help prevent the surface from getting stained. This is also why the boards will feel a little waxy in the beginning. It is ok if the wax is wiped off, but please never use chemicals. The wax will also help protect woods, like Purple Heart, keep their color. One side has a rounded edge this is your fruit, vegetable and bread side. The side with the square end is for meat only. This will help in differentiating the two sides of your cutting board and keeping meat and everything else separate.

DO NOT:

  • Never soak your wood cutting board in water! This will attack the glue and cause the wood to expand, permanently damaging the cutting board

  • Meats or vegetables and fruit should never be allowed to sit for long periods of time on the surface of the cutting board

  • Never run through the dish washer

DO:

  • Use these cutting boards. These are meant to be used and are very durable

  • Rounded edge this is your fruit, vegetable and bread side. The side with the square end is for meat only. After usage, always wipe off with a damp clean cloth of paper towel

  • When wood surface becomes dry, (Which will progress faster with usage), treat when needed with Skyline Wood Furniture oil and wax.

Thank you again and I hope you enjoy your cutting board!
